First
EFC (Cedar Falls, Iowa) started an outreach team that
both prays for individual opportunities – holding
each other accountable – and brainstorms church-wide
ideas for reaching into their community.
One
creative outreach involves free babysitting. First EFC
offered its first free babysitting on a Friday night
last December, so people could do Christmas shopping
or get out for an evening. The community learned of the
offer through public-service announcements on secular
radio stations, fliers at pregnancy crisis centers and
other places and a free newspaper article.
Five
non-church families and 17 children participated, with 25
from the church helping with games, crafts and other activities.
Families signed up ahead of time, and each received a created-especially-for-them
bag of gifts and snacks and a JESUS video upon leaving.
“The
kids had a blast and the parents were so appreciative,” Pastor
Gary Allen says. “One lady had not been out of
her house for more than two years because of her baby
and she was overwhelmed by our outreach of love.” The
outreach was so successful (and fun) that First EFC held
it again on Valentine’s Day, with some new families
and some returning ones.
“It
shows you don’t have to be a large church to reach
lost people.”
